About the event
Join us for a circle gathering of the calming peaceful practice of Sashiko stitching (刺し子, meaning "little pokes" or "small piercing") Sashiko is becoming more and more popular in the textile industry. Sashiko is a form of functional embroidery that originated in Japan. It first was used around the Edo era as a way for farmers to mend their worn clothing. It is now popular as a decorative stitch in modern Sashiko quilts and Boro clothing, accessories and home decor. Much easier and relaxing than the embroidery that most are familiar with.
We'll go over a brief history of Sashiko. I'll share samples and you will create a small Sashiko sampler square using traditional Sashiko stencils of your choosing. Included will be a pre-printed mini sampler for you to practice on. These mini sashiko samples can be framed, made into coasters, used to decorate clothing, use as a patch, a pin cushion, sew into a sachet or create a microwaveable hand warmer.
What I want to provide you with through this Mini-Workshop is:
*time to slow down from the constant motion of everyday life
*confidence in your creativity
*the ability to mend your own clothes therefor recycling
*a meditative art practice that's good for your mind
*the knowledge needed so you can create your very own stitched piece of art
*Practice non judgement or your work while peacefully stitching
*Learn relaxation/meditation through creativity and peaceful stitching
All sewing levels are welcome. All supplies will be provided
