OUR STORY

Sticks and Stones Farm has successfully preserved its pocket of rural America in an area that is losing its farms at a frightening pace. It remains “a piece of Maine – in Connecticut,” as  owner Tim Currier puts it, all within easy driving distance of New York, Providence, RI, and Boston. As Sticks and Stones Farm evolved, Currier built roads, irrigation, composting and solar systems, and several cabins created from natural materials. It is the perfect environment for a community of artists and craftsmen, naturalists, and environmentalists to converge and flourish. The woods are home to beavers, muskrats, ducks, & hawks, owls, turtles, racoon, deer, fox, and coyote. Walk the steep roads carved into the hills and become aware of all that is ongoing in the woods. Follow the tracks of the raccoon and white-tailed deer. Smell the green of the dense moss after a rainfall. Listen for the plaintive call of the coyotes at night. It truly is a rustic farm in Connecticut.

Self-sufficiency was Tim Currier‘s primary goal when be bought the 60-acre farm in Newtown, CT 40 years ago. A farmer and stone mason by trade his business thrived from it’s home base in Newtown, CT. For years the barn stored machines and tools for harvesting and moving stones. Over the past twenty years Sticks and Stones has undergone many changes. Different people and ideas have moved through the space here and left their mark. No longer just a work yard for the stone business the farm now attracts people here in its own right.

Today there are a host of opportunities for people here. We have hiking trails winding their way up and around the mountain. We have a one-acre Organic Century Garden managed by Real Food Share, a non-profit organization with a mission to help end food insecurity in Newtown  by donating all of the fresh produce to  local food banks. We host Two Coyotes Wilderness School for nature-based summer camps and homeschool programs, and we have a beautiful 54 foot stone and moss labyrinth. There are numerous rustic cabins available for rent during the summer as well.

MEET THE OWNER

Tim Currier is a Master Stone Mason that has worked with stone for 40 years all over the world. Majoring in archeology in college, his love of both stone and travel took him to Malaysia with a two-year stint in the Peace Corps. He started a preschool there and also taught English to elementary age school children. While abroad he came to love and appreciate the simple lifestyles that he still practices today.

His love and respect of nature and the land has allowed Sticks and Stones to remain the quiet sanctuary it is in the midst of bustling Fairfield County.

Tim has been an avid sailor spending many of his winters sailing either the Bahamas or Hawaiian waters. If Tim is not playing with sticks or stones, you might find him practicing yoga or Pilates, meditating, or going for a bike ride. He has 3 children and 3 grandchildren.
